Satellite Mag Speaker series: Let's Talk About Cities + George Positive + Three Pints Shy + Oxblood @ The Way Station

7:30pm- Satellite Mag Speaker series: Let's Talk About Cities

Join Satellite (www.satellitemagazine.ca), an independent magazine about cities, culture, and politics, for the second event in its Cities+ speaker series. Presenters include:

Engineer Tom Wilcock, head of the advanced technology and research group in the New York office of global design firm Arup.

Emily-Bell Dinan, cofounder of Roger That Garden Project. A community garden experiment that began eight years ago on a vacant Crown Heights lot, Roger That now houses hundreds of native plants and provides space for local residents to garden and harvest food from communally cultivated plots. Since discovering that the lot was purchased by a developer in late 2013, Dinan and many others have been fighting to save the green space.

Nick Collins, who has been involved with the Greene Hill Food Co-op since it was originally proposed in 2009, joining the board of directors in 2012. He has focused primarily on developing member services and in-store operations, with a particular emphasis on providing access to healthy, affordable food for all neighborhood residents.

Doreen Adengo, who teaches architecture at the Pratt Institute and heads Adengo Architects. For the past few years, she has been researching the architecture of her hometown, Ugandan capital Kampala. (Held over from our January event.)

Plus:
Two distinct Brooklyn musical voices, Kenny Warren (trumpet) and Jeremiah Lockwood (guitar), play their own lively take on American roots, blues, and country music. Featuring new and old songs inspired by Lead Belly, The Carter Family, and Ornette Coleman.

“Ghost Blazer: Stupid and Smart” - Sarah Hay, ID Magazine

“Wu Tang’s Raekwon might be busy reminiscing about the golden era of hip-hip and making noise about how he hasn’t heard anything ‘original’ in the last seven years, but he’s about to get an education in the form of George Positive.” - Tremaine Emory, Useless Magazine

“100 percent Indian Staten Islander George Positive snort fat Miami basslines, space out with old-school synth squirts, and put on airs made not only by Nike, but the bling era—their raps could be inspired by corporate shout-out tracker AmericanBrandstand.com.” - Nick Catucci Village Voice

“Making our way through the capacity crowd, we discovered what the entire group encircled, mesmerized: a performance by George Philip, aka George Positive — MC genius …..An entranced audience jumped along to the high energy created by the rapper and shouted back during call and responses. The charisma was so intense that at one moment several revelers joined the MC in the center of the crowd and piled onto each other’s shoulders, jumping up and down with arms in the air.” - Carlo Farini, FlashArt.com

Genre: alternative/folk/singer-song writer
For Fans of: Nick Drake, Elliott Smith

"oxblood is a solo finger style acoustic project from bob oxblood. the songs are not 'americana', but more 'classical' in technique with a warm melancholy tint to the lyrics and harmony. good music for March"

"Oxblood stands far and away the most original solo acoustic performer I have heard in years. It's not just that the songs are uniquely beautiful and smartly crafted but they are delivered in a way that you simply, believe it. I sense actual art being made here. As the music takes a delicate approach to produce such a moving result, it's nice to follow the refreshingly original techniques used to achieve this.........." -Michael Sorvino Bauer (-Punchline.2! review Richmond, VA 2012)
