Monique Schubert Art Opening

My work explores repetitive patterns and the interaction between a figurative element and the patterned ground. I am inspired by organic patterns found in nature, textile designs, and wallpaper. I express my fascination in minimalist terms. Through pattern I explore themes of awareness and transcendence as they are related to and located in the human body. Repeated patterns become a metaphor for the way life is lived within routine, habits of ideas, feelings,
and memories. The figurative elements/the silhouettes represent the power and presence of human thought. My work imparts a spiritual essence to the surrounding environment and is able to transform the space from secular to sacred.

Meditation is a central theme in my work. The act of painting can be a meditation in itself. I focus my attention on the urban environment of New York City, and on the people as an element of nature with in the material infrastructure of the city. I am interested in how we, human beings, are part of the natural world, how we respond and adapt, how we build culture and community, how our ideas and memories, like the objects we use, are subject to a cycle of accumulation,
decay and regeneration.
