Art Talks Brooklyn + CachaBacha + Joshua Garcia + UltraFaux @ The Way Station

NEW! 7:30pm- Art Talks Brooklyn

A new speaker series highlighting Brooklyn Arts initiatives and programs. Monthly, we will invite three speakers, each allotted 15 minutes, to share how they are impacting our community through the arts.

Shoe String Press- Lane Sell, Crown Heights

Founded in 2011, Shoestring Press serves artists in Crown Heights with work space, technical expertise, gallery exhibitions, critical engagement, and intellectual community. We've built a community of 25 working member artists and wider range of performers, workshop participants, exhibitors, and friends on the premise proving that making art should be an open process, one that is visible to the community and affordable to anyone who wants to participate in visual culture.

9pm- CachaBacha
Genre: Folk
For fans of: Tallest Man on Earth, Shakey Graves, Thao with the Get Down Stay Down

Sisters Andrea and Natalia Stevenson play with an intimacy derived from spending whole lives together. The duo inhabits a space at once private and public - broadcasting personal narratives to all who will listen while retaining their music’s honest and personal focus. Andrea writes with an ancient melancholy inherited through the generations of musicians who’ve influenced her, like legendary delta blues picker Mississippi John Hurt. Similarly to Hurt and many other American Primitivists, Andrea received no tutelage, opting instead to hone rhythmic skills like bucket drumming on New York City streets and develop her songwriting from contemporary folk players like Conor Oberst and The Tallest Man on Earth.

----Our song "Mother Tongue" was one of the finalists on an NPR Battle of the Bands contest. Judge Thao Nguyen of "Thao with the Get Down Stay Down" named it one of her favorites. "I thought the melodies were really beautiful, and the lyrics, as a listener I listen to lyrics more closely than other things. I was very impressed."-Thao Nguyen

----For Folk's Sake selected the title track of our debut "Sidewinder EP" as song of the day. “[W]e were delighted to stumble across New Jersey’s Natalia and Andrea Stevenson, aka CachaBacha, notable not only for being strikingly talented at a frankly ridiculously young age...we love the title track from their Sidewinder EP, which sets a remarkably sparse and understated tone."-For Folks Sake

Genre: Gypsy Jazz
For fans of: Birelli Lagrene, Django Reinhardt, Les Doigts de l'Homme, Gogo Bordello

UltraFaux is an acoustic power trio performing original music that draws on elements of gypsy folk, hot swing, blues, be-bop and musette. Guitarists Sami Arefin and Michael Joseph Harris trade dazzling leads, harmonizing together on rich gypsy-inspired melodies. The dynamic Eddie Hrybyk on upright bass brings his passion for improvisation to the music.

"We sometimes forget that jazz was first and foremost a people's music meant for dancing and socializing. One evening with Ultrafaux demonstrates why jazz has been so irresistible to listeners all over the world." Ken Avis, BJA

"Baltimore's innovative gypsy jazz band as featured on Baltimore Hit Parade."  WTMD

"The fresh faces of American gypsy jazz."  Tom Cole NPR
