VIDEO: 500 Men Against Breast Cancer

500 Men Making a Difference to participate in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walkathon 2011.

, a Bed-Stuy community organization, is calling all Brooklyn men to join them on Saturday, October 16, for the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walkathon in Central Park.

Interested participants can sign up here. But anyone is invited to join the walk on the day-of. Registration begins at 8 a.m. – 12 p.m., but they are inviting all to come anytime for registration and join the cause.

“This event is of particular importance to our organization, because it allows us to showcase the desire men of color have to support the healthcare issues that affect our communities,” said Wayne Devonish, president of 500 Men, who helped start the organization a year ago in June.

“Within the ranks of our organization, there was such a large proportion of men who felt affected by this disease that the desire to do something had to be addressed, and the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walkathon is the perfect action for us to participate in.”

500 Men Making a Difference came together in Bed-Stuy to increase the level of civic engagement that young minority men have in the community to empower the men of Brooklyn to build on a legacy of social advancement and communal development.

This is the second year that the 500 Men has participated in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walkathon. This year, the group is looking to bring out between 500 – 600 men and raise between $10,000 - $100,000. So far, the group has raised $2,400.

“Please join us if you are physically able, to raise awareness and support advancing treatment for breast cancer,” Devonish said.
