Snag a Christmas Tree without Breaking Your Budget, or Your Back

Your best bets for getting the tree of your dreams in or around Prospect Heights.

Shopping for the holidays may seem daunting in the city, especially if you don't have a car. But luckily, Prospect Heights is host to quite a few places to pick up a tree, and some places will even deliver. Here are some of your best bets:

In Front of Duane Reade (corner of Flatbush Ave. and Park Place, Prospect Heights, no phone)

This place is probably one of the best choices in terms of price and convenience. Not only do these decent looking trees start at $25 for a 6- to 7-footer, or $45 for an 8-footer, but they will also deliver to most of Prospect Heights for just $15. But if you were thinking of buying that cool reindeer made of tree branches, it sold earlier this week.

DNY Natural Land (322 Flatbush Ave. between Park and Sterling, Prospect Heights, 718-783-0038)

These trees are a little pricier, at $25 to $30 for 4- to 5-footer, $35 for a 6-footer, or $45 for a 7-footer. But the trees are generally very fresh and full, and they will deliver to Prospect Heights and most other Brooklyn neighborhoods.

Natty Garden (609 Washington Avenue between Atlantic Avenue and Dean Street, (718) 483-8833; www.nattygarden.com)

This funky plant shop sells a small but healthy assortment for Christmas trees. They are on the pricier end, starting at $33 for a 4-foot tree and $48 for a 6-foot tree, and will also deliver to the neighborhood.

Green in Vermont (Union Street between Sixth and Seventh avenues, Park Slope)

This place is in Park Slope, but it's the closest place we know of that sells organic trees free of pesticides. They deliver for a price to be negotiated, but do free deliveries for elderly and disabled customers. With all of their trees running $10 a foot, this is a pricier option, but you're probably used to that if you buy organic regularly.

Unnamed Tree Lot (Myrtle Avenue between Washington and Hall, Clinton Hill)

This place might be worth the trip, especially if you have a car, because they are possibly one of the cheapest places in Brooklyn, with trees starting at $10. They also have standard 6-foot trees starting at $30, a large, staff, will deliver for a nominal amount, and sell wreaths and a small assortment of other Christmas decorations.

Home Depot (585 Dekalb Ave., Bed-Stuy;  (718) 230-0833; www.homedepot.com)

A Home Depot is probably the last place you want to be on a weekend during the holiday season, but their Christmas trees are among the cheapest in Brooklyn -- 8-foot trees are as low as $40 and 6-foot trees start at only $35. There is no delivery, unless you order trees from the website. The catch?  They're about four times the price, plus delivery.

J&L Landscaping (702 Caton Ave., Kensington; (718) 438-3199; www.jllandscapingnyc.com

If you have a car, it might be worth the 15-minute drive to this family owned and operated gardening store. Why? The calm, less urban atmosphere, filled with trees and plants makes the experience more of an outing instead of a chore, especially if you have kids. Fresh cut trees from Canada start at about $42 for a 6-foot tree. They also sell poinsettias, wreaths, and tree stands. Although they don't deliver, the 5 percent off you receive from mentioning the "winter offer" on their website might be the equivalent of a car-service home with your new tree, assuming you can find a car to take you.

Greenpoint Trees (Corner of Manhattan Avenue and Calyer Street; Corner of Nassau Avenue and Diamond Street; www.greenpointtrees.com)

Too cold out to go tree shopping? The longest running tree lot in Greenpoint sells a variety of trees ranging from 2-footers to ones big enough for city plazas, and you can order any tree that you want off their website. In addition to selling tree stands and balsam wreaths, they'll also deliver anywhere to anywhere in Brooklyn. Be forewarned though: service this good comes at a price.
