In About a Week, Prospect Heights Will No Longer Be Starbucks-Free

The end is nearly here. For as long as I can remember, Prospect Heights has been without a chain coffee shop (except for that short-lived Dunkin' Donuts on Flatbush).

But today the Starbucks signage arrived, and according to workers the shop is expected to open in about a week.

For those who haven't passed by the corner of Flatbush Avenue and Park Place in awhile, the chain coffee shop is taking over the enormous storefront at 164 Park Place.

Perhaps that store, with its fantastic location and enormous floorspace may be destined to only have something like a Starbucks there. The beloved Park Heights Stationers closed due to the rising costs of operation after 25 years. Five Guys Burgers came in in September of 2011, and then after 14 months, it closed down too.

So if a chain burger shop like 5 Guys couldn't swing it, who can afford the estimated $20,000-or-more-per-month rent besides a mega-chain like Starbucks?

At least we still have a wealth of indie coffee shops to choose from in the neighborhood. And since they're on the other side of the street, I suppose we could always disown them as being just in Park Slope. (But then we'd have to disown the new Franny's as well as Bklyn Larder.)

What do you think, Prospect Heights? How do you feel about Starbucks coming to the neighborhood?
