The Great Escape: Clear Your Mind with Meditation

Vajradhara Meditation Center provides a calming space to reflect.

Living in an urban environment can take a toll on your sanity. Sure, there are ways to deal with it – knocking back endless pints at the local pub, locking yourself in your tiny apartment. A healthier idea might be to learn the quiet pleasures of meditation.

Vajradhara Meditation Center, 235 Saint Marks Ave. in Prospect Heights, is a member of the New Kadampa Buddhist tradition – but don’t worry, there’s no religion involved in meditation. It is simply a way to clear one’s mind and de-compress from the stresses of modern life.

At the beginning of each class, the teacher will lead a gentle guided sitting session (beginners welcome!), and discuss meditation practice. The session ends with another guided meditation, with a chance to talk with the teacher and other students afterwards. Feel free to seek help during the class, as the standard lotus sitting position may not be comfortable for everyone.

Classes are held weekly on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings. Monday and Thursday classes are held between 7-9 p.m., at $12 per class or $80 per month (unlimited). On Wednesdays, classes are held 7:30-8:15 p.m. at a suggested donation price of only $5.

Dress comfortably: leggings or sweatpants are a good choice. Socks are a must, because you will be removing your shoes. Basically, wear something that isn’t itchy or constricting – you will want to be able to focus your entire attention on relaxation.
