Events Honoring Martin Luther King

Not sure how to honor MLK this weekend? There are a host of choices in Prospect Heights and the area.

From panel discussions to gospel music, to meditation workshops there is something for everyone to honor MLK.

Sunday:

If you're looking for something to do with the kids, the offers free admission today as well as an event at 2:30 p.m. for children 5 and under where kids can listen to a poem about Martin Luther King Jr. and then create a collage in his honor.

For adults, there is  a panel discussion at the . During "," will discuss how they are affected by Dr. King and his legacy. The event is co-hosted by WNYC’s Brian Lehrer and Celeste Headlee, co-host of The Takeaway.  To reserve a place, e-mail RSVP@wnyc.org with your name and the number of guests attending. And dress warmly -- the might be a long line to get in, according to a WNYC event organizer.

Monday:

The biggest event happening tomorrow is the at . The day begins at 10:30 a.m. with a performance by the a capella group The Persuasions followed by  the Reverend Timothy Wright Memorial Choir. The music will be followed by an address by author Walter Mosley. Get there early and dress warmly: the line to get in can be long. UPDATE, Sun. 11:30 p.m.: Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced this afternoon that he will be speaking at this event at 10:45 a.m.

At 1 p.m. at , there will be a of "Neshoba: the Price of Freedom," a documentary about Neshoba County, Mississippi, where three civil rights workers were murdered in 1964.

Also at 1 p.m., at Prospect Heights High School Campus, 883 Classon Ave (Across from the Brooklyn Museum parking lot), there will be an sponsored by the Central Brooklyn Martin Luther King Commission. The event will feature presentations by the winners of poetry, essay, art and oratorical contests.  There will also be an opening procession led by the Ifetayo African drummers. Retired Congressman Major Owens will serve as the Master of Ceremonies and also discuss education in New York state.

For kids, the Brooklyn Children's Museum, which continues its , has a host of events, beginning with a film of the "I Have a Dream Speech," at 11:30 a.m., recommended for ages 8 and up. Next there will be a craft session focusing on the work of Coretta Scott King at 12:30 p.m. for kids 6 and up, followed by at a special poetry and dance tribute to Coretta Scott King at 1:30 p.m. for kids of all ages performed by students from Aspire’s Pinnacle School of Dance. At 2:30 p.m. there will be a show for kids of all ages, "Big Ideas about Freedom!" looking at the historic and present-day struggles for freedom, social justice and human rights.

If you want to honor Dr. Martin Luther King's work in a different way, one option is "" at  , 748 Union St. The event, which runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. will offer yoga, meditation and community cooking.
