BAM Dares You to Outwit Talking Heads' David Byrne

By Matthew Hampton

Talking Heads frontman David Byrne had his crack at short-form bike rack poetry at BAM last year, and came up with "micRo liP" and "PinK cRown."

The rock demi-god threw together an alphabet of his own device and then used it to spell out words for you to hang your greasy bike on while you watch foreign films with misspelled subtitles.

Now's your chance to see if you can do better, which you canNOT because he is him, and you are you.

If you must, however, here is the link at which you can submit your inferior poetry. Remember, you have to stick to Byrne's alphabet, included in PDF format above.

Five finalists will be selected May 17, and then those five will be voted on by the always-intemperate Brooklyn social media community.

"When designing these bike racks, I wondered how I could make something that was modular, yet variable—a design that wouldn't always look the same and could vary depending on season and placement," said the awesome musical genius in a press release from last year. "I realized that a few very basic shapes — a semi circle, a line, and a V shape—would allow one to make a good percentage of the letters of our alphabet."

So go ahead, Brooklyn, try your luck.

And now, to satisfy those who came via a Talking Heads e-mail alert, some David Byrne/bicycle puns:

Love -----> building with bike racks

Bike-o killer

(Nothing but) Flowers (and bike racks)

Add your own puns in the comments! It's also a contest! Winner will be personally disparaged by me below, and possibly via e-mail.
