9-11 Memorial Events in Brooklyn

In 2012, events paying tribute to the victims of the September 11 World Trade Center attacks include a church service, concert, memorial wall and peace walk.

 

To remember those who died at the World Trade Center and related attacks 11 years ago, there are several events planned in Brooklyn: 

Memorial Service: A tribute wil be held at the New Haven Seventh Day Adventist Church, 634 Prospect Place between Bedford and Franklin. 1 p.m.

The Memorial Wall: Located in Downtown Brooklyn at FDNY Headquarters, this plaque lists the names of 55 FDNY members who died in the decade since the attack due to World Trade Center-related illnesses. There will be no formal program.

9/11 Memorial Concert: At the Fulton Ferry Landing, located at the foot of Old Fulton Street, Bargemusic will play its annual tribute to the victims of 9/11 with a free concert led by its director, Mark Peskanov. The program features works by Bach, Bottoms, Haydn, Schubert and Chopin and will take place at 8 pm. There is no reserved seating, doors open at 7:15 pm.
 

The Tribute in Light: Located at West and Morris Streets in lower Manhattan but visible from various Brooklyn vantage points, the lights will begin at sunset (7:11 pm) on Sep. 10 and fade away at dawn on Sept. 11 (6:34 am). Then it will be repeated at sundown on Sept. 11 through dawn on Sept. 12. 

Recommended locations to observe the Tribute in Light include Red Hook, Columbia Waterfront, Brooklyn Bridge Park, Brooklyn Bridge Pedestrian Walkway, Brooklyn Heights Promenade, Fulton Ferry State Park and Fort Greene Park.

If you want to watch the commemoration ceremony at the 9/11 Memorial, it begins at 8:30 a.m. and can be seen on most major television channels. It will also be streamed live on the Memorial Museum's website.

If you wish to take part in a moment of silence for the victims on your own, here are the important times:

8:46 a.m. -- Moment of silence marking when American Airlines Flight 11 hit the north tower, and houses of worship toll their bells. Then family members will read the names of those killed.

9:03 a.m. -- Moment of silence marking when United Airlines Flight 175 hit the south tower.

9:37 a.m. -- Moment of silence marking when American Airlines Flight 77 hit the Pentagon.

9:59 a.m. -- Moment of silence marking when the south tower fell.

10:03 a.m. -- Moment of silence marking when United Airlines Flight 93 crashed near Shanksville, Pa.

10:28 a.m. -- Moment of silence marking when the north tower fell.
