Prospect Heights-area news and events you won't want to miss.

-You need to know if your train is running. Today it is. Jan. 1, 2011 is a wonderful day for straphangers. The trains are running on the more-frequent Saturday, not a holiday schedule, and all normal Saturday trains going through Prospect Heights are running, according to the MTA.

-You need to commune with nature. There are bird-watching walks in Prospect Park today and tomorrow at 10 a.m. and noon. Meet at the Audubon Center, near the Ocean Avenue/Lincoln Road entrance. Free.

-You need to cook for that New Year's Day open house. Sadly, you'll have to settle for the supermarket today because New Year's Day is one of only two Saturdays a year when the  is closed.

-You need something to do with the kids. It comes in handy that the Prospect Park Zoo, the park's Lefferts Historic House, and the New York Aquarium are open 365 days a year, because the , The Brooklyn Children's Museum, , and  are all closed today.

- You need to watch the game. And you need rashers. You can watch the game anywhere, but at Mullanes Bar & Grill,  71 Lafayette Ave., in Fort Greene, you can do so while feasting on really fatty bacon and black-and-white pudding at their "classic Irish Brunch."  Northwestern faces off against Texas Tech at noon, at 1 p.m. it's Alabama and Michigan State and at 1:30 p.m. it's Mississippi against Michigan.
