The Music Stops at Sycamore

City orders an end to basement performances at the Cortelyou Road bar and flowershop.

The Sycamore Bar and Flowershop is closing its basement music venue Sycamore Presents, according to an announcement on their website.

“We are closing the venue because, in short, the city has deemed the space unfit for the performances,” bookings manager John J. Hagen wrote. “I will miss curating the program for such a lovely space, but what I will miss more is seeing stellar live performances in my neighborhood on a nightly basis.”

The New York City Department of Buildings (DOB) issued a Class 1 violation at Sycamore’s 1118 Cortelyou Rd. location on May 17, which said the premises were “immediately hazardous.” Another complaint said the bar’s cellar had “insufficient egress” and that occupancy was contrary to that allowed by the DOB.

The Ditmas Park venue – with a maximum capacity 45 – had been holding nightly performances since its opening in 2009.

The bar and flower shop on the ground floor will remain open.
