Today is turkey day, but tomorrow is the beginning of the holiday shopping season.
Local shops hope you'll remember them, too, and have created "Small Business Saturday" as a follow-up to Black Friday. They're asking each person to buy one thing from a locally owned retailer on Nov. 26.
Luckily there are plenty of great places to work on your holiday list right in Prospect Heights and many of them are having sales.
Here are some of our favorites. Did we leave out your favorite (or two)? Let everyone know about them in the comments:
633 Vanderbilt Ave. bet. Prospect and St. Marks
This shop has upscale vintage jewelry and designer clothing—you might find a pair of Vivienne Westwood platform mary janes on one day or a 1980s red Gucci handbag the next. Other items include dresses, sunglasses and jewelry.
806 Washington Ave bet. Sterling and St. Johns Place
This lovely clothing and jewelry shop is offering 50% off the entire store on Friday, buy one item, get the second item at 50% off Saturday and 50% off all sweaters on Sunday.
560 Vanderbilt Ave. bet. Bergen and Dean
The Vanderbilt Avenue institution is selling all their used bikes at 10% off.
, 886 Pacific St. at Grand Avenue
The shop sells a wide range of one-of-a-kind clothing designed by the owner. The store has been selling everything at 15-20% off since the beginning of the month in honor if it's 10th year anniversary, but Saturday it will be offering additional sales as well.
192 Flatbush Ave. at Bergen
No sales that we know of, but this is a great spot to pick up a chess set, be it marble, wood or plastic, for your favorite chess aficionado.
533 Park Place at Classon
This flower/skate/gift shop indeed has something for everyone in their carefully chosen stock. No sales, but a great range of offerings.
, 71 6th Ave. at Bergen
Although it's a flower shop, it also has a nice collection of French dish towels, plates and other gifts and is one of my favorite places to pick up a quick present.
Redberi, 319 Flatbush Ave. bet. Prospect and Park places
No sales that we know of, but this place has not only some really cool clothing, but also great accessories including tights and scarves.
600 Vanderbilt Ave. at St. Marks
This lovely shop has a well chosen selection of new and used books. No sales this weekend, but a great little shop well worth a look.
Yanatiba 714 Washington Ave. at Prospect Place
This ecclectic antique shop is offering 20% off the entire store on Friday and all weekend.
