Meet Your Winey Neighbor

The new wine shop is still a few months away from opening, but here's a quick sneak peek.

Immediately after the awning for a new shop called The Winey Neighbor went up at 679 Washington Avenue, residents (and Brownstoner!) were abuzz wondering what the new wine store would bring to the neighborhood.

Shop-owners and husband and wife duo Kenneth Tin-Kin Hung and Young Jung are still months away from opening their doors (the pair just applied with the liquor authority last month, and were told it could take 4-7 months for approval), but Patch got a little preview of what Prospect Heights residents can expect from their new “Winey Neighbor.”

Who are they? Tin-Kin Hung and Jung met in San Francisco, before traveling cross-country to New York together. Jung has worked as a wedding photographer, and ran Cheap A** Food, a website that reviews affordable eats in New York. Tin-Kin Hung works as a visual artist and a fit model.

Why wine? In addition to food, the couple has a passion for wine and spirits, and according to Jung: “We wanted to share this experience with our neighbors, bringing unique wines from all over the world for a great price.”

About that name… The couple were sharing a bottle of wine, and Jung made reference to “the winey husband.” They loved the name, but after brainstorming with some friends, for the name of the shop, they decided The Winey Neighbor was a better fit.

What will set this wine shop apart? “We realized from living in this neighborhood for over two years that the focus was on big name brands and hard liquor,” Jung said. “They serve their purpose but I felt that our neighbors, including myself, could use a boutique wine shop specializing in interesting wines from all around the world.”

Jung said the shop will “strive to make wine drinking fun, friendly and dynamic,” so stay tuned for the grand opening!
