In Guerrilla Project, Locals Voice Hopes for Washington Avenue

Prospect/Crown Heights residents say what they want to see replace the empty lot at St. John's Place.

There's been plenty of talk about the need for a bookstore, butcher or other non-bar/restaurant come to Washington Avenue.

But at the corner of Washington Avenue and St. John's Place, someone has set up a more visible way for Prospect and Crown Heighters to have their say.

Last Tuesday (April 2) name tags and a permanent marker were placed on the plywood around the vacant lot and people were encouraged to write what they would like to see come to the spot.

Suggestions have been varied. One person asked for a GNC, but most made non-chainstore requests. There were several requests for a school, community garden or park. One person asked for a shelter. Several asked for a music store or music venue. There was a request for a wellness center/spa and one for a pet store. The simplist request was for a home. The saddest: "anything but a jail."

The empty lot resulted after a 2011 fire at 816 Washington partially collapsed the four-story vacant apartment building on the spot.

What would you like to see come to that corner? If you aren't able to get to the corner (or even if you are) you can have your say in the comments below, as well as on a survey being conducted by Heart of Brooklyn, which you can fill out online.
