Dean Street wins Taste Off in Washington Avenue Rocks Festival

Local restaurant now owns bragging rights as the recipient of the Best Appetizer in Prospect Heights Trophy.

Dean Street has won the Taste Off competition during the Washington Avenue Rocks Street Festival held last weekend.

The appetizer contest highlighted the best portions from restaurants located along Washington, Classon and Underhill avenues. This also allowed chefs to showcase their most popular appetizers with a chance to take home the coveted Best Appetizer in Prospect Heights Trophy. Councilwoman Letitia James, members from the community and Brooklyn Exposed, and even Patch's own Mindy Abshier were all on deck to judge the competition.

The restaurants that participated include Abigail Cafe, Dean Street, Chavela's, Cheryl's Global Soul, God Is Restaurant, Janelle's, Natural Blend, The Spot, Udom Thai Restaurant and many more establishments that represent the area.

"We are really excited and we were really up against some great restaurants in the area," said John Longo, co-owner of Dean Street. "This is the first time that we've participated in the Taste Off and of course we can't wait to participate again next year.

Located at 755 Dean St. and the old site of Tavern on Dean, the restaurant's winning appetizer was their chicken/veggie rollotini. Popular among the judges, it consists of chicken breast, crimini mushrooms, sweet peppers, parmesan cheese with dijon mustard.

"This is the first year we've entered into the contest and we hope that this win will drive and attract more customers to our restaurant," said Longo. "We just opened up and established Dean Street in January 2011, so we're happy that we won."

The restaurant serves up lunch, brunch, dinner and bar menu items. Open daily, Dean Street offers live music every Monday and Wednesday, and a late night happy hour every Sunday through Thursday.

"Even though we entered the rollotini in the competition, we also served up fried corn on the cob and Cuban sandwiches under our tent that were available to the public," said Longo.

The event, which was presented by the Washington Avenue-Prospect Heights Association (WAPHA), provides support services for community initiatives in the Prospect Heights/Crown Heights neighborhoods.  For complete local news, promotions and events, visit their website
