Carlton Park Gets Full Liquor License

Flatbush Avenue farm-to-table organic restaurant plans seasonal fruit and herb cocktails and kegged wine sold by the ounce.

The state granted Carlton Park, formerly known as M. Helen Kitchen, a full liquor license.

Although the at the corner of Park, Carlton and Flatbush is primarily an organic, seasonal restaurant, the license will allow it to serve up elderberry martinis or cilantro-lime gin and tonics with the grass-feed beef burgers and salt-roasted, red-and-yellow beet salads.

Owner Greg Yerman, who also owns Burrito Bar down the street, said he was relieved to get the news earlier this month.

“Now I can get excited,” he said.

Yerman is planning an extensive cocktail menu with a focus on seasonal fruit and herbs. There will also be kegged wine sold by the ounce.

The license comes with , but over the objections of the board's Economic Development Committee, which is concerned about the and liquor-serving restaurants in the neighborhood.

The restaurant is less than 500 feet from Burrito Bar, Ocean’s 8 and Sharlene's. When a venue is less than 500 feet from three or more bars, it’s even harder to get state approval for the license.

But the restaurant is not a bar, Yerman said in an interview last month. At night the focus will be on fine dining, and the spot will also be open for lunch and breakfast, with such grab-and-go offerings as breakfast biscuits, lattes, and a juice bar with smoothies and protein shakes.

The 42-seat restaurant does not have an opening date, but Yerman is still aiming for next month. The hours will be 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and until midnight Friday and Saturday.
