Brooklyn Brew Dogs Brings Late Night Snacks to Washington Commons

Washington Ave. resident Jon Schamann offers hot, salty snacks to the Prospect Heights bar crowd.

Nothing goes better with an ice cold beer than a salty snack, but although bar after bar has cropped up on Washington Avenue, late night food options can be scarce. Never fear, summer drinkers! Brooklyn Brew Dogs has come to the rescue!

Brooklyn Brew Dogs, a small hot dog stand, popped up last weekend on the corner of Washington Ave. and Park Place next to . Under the Sabrett umbrella familiar to all New Yorkers, Prospect Heights resident Jon Schamann sells all-beef hot dogs ($3, or two for $5) and potato knishes ($2) to the late-night set on Friday and Saturday nights. His unique touch?

“My special hot dog water,” Schamann said.

The recipe, of course, is a secret, but he did tell us that the condiments he offers, like onions and sauerkraut, are “the good stuff,” also from Sabrett.

“I started out with the cheap stuff, but the hot dogs were only $2. But people complained, so I said, ‘I’ll just get the good stuff and charge $3,’” said Schamann, happy to adjust to the whims of his audience.

Schamann didn’t have plans to go into the food business. He normally works in freelance television camera utility, setting up cameras for live events. But when work slowed down this summer, he happened across someone who was trying to get rid of a hot dog cart, and an idea was born.

Brooklyn Brew Dogs isn't officially affiliated with Washington Commons, but when Schamann approached them with the idea, they agreed to let him set up shop and store his cart at the bar.

So far the response has been good; Schamann sells from “7pm until we’re SOLD OUT,” and on Saturday night around 10:00pm he had a regular stream of customers.  Still, he knows the true test is coming next week.

“I feel like I’m in training for ,” he said with a laugh.
