BAM Cultural District Set to Grow

Downtown Brooklyn's cultural district will see new developments soon.

Downtown Brooklyn’s cultural district, which includes the Brooklyn Academy of Music, has plans to grow, according to the New York Post.

“Downtown Brooklyn has very quickly become one of the city’s most vibrant cultural destinations and an exciting place to live,” Mayor Michael Bloomberg has previously said.

Now, development team Gotham Organization and DT Salazar, Inc. want to build 600 apartments and a new “cultural, community and commercial space” in the district, says the Post. The parcel is bounded by Fulton Street, Rockwell Place and Ashland Place, and the residential side will have about 300 affordable units.

On Flatbush Avenue and Ashland Place, developer Two Trees Management Co., has begun the public review process on a 32-story, 300-plus-unit apartment tower that will also include cultural and community space and a public plaza.

According to the Post, until Thursday, the city was accepting proposals from developers looking to bring new life to a city-owned site lot at Ashland Place and Lafayette Avenue.

To answer your question, water pipes that are broke, lack of heat; unrepaired apts--some offline for years, mountains of trash not picked up by NYC Sanitation for days and weeks at a time, broken elevators, the sky is the limit. Joe Take a chill pill. I don;t need your authorization for any silly sign-in name Also, what incentive do developers have in investing in CITY housing? I would think none since there is no return. Sounds more like a petty whine coming from your post. Get up and make a difference amongst your city housing community and maybe investors will see your action as an opportunity. Last time I checked, a little effort cost nothing

Joe Gonzalez is NOT a whiner. YOU are a coward hiding behind a fake name attacking me; the real Joe Gonzalez has NEVER posted behind a fake name. My above comments reference local elected political leaders who provide the public tax money & political support for the Barclay Center, BAM, Two Trees Management & other groups. They are not eager to spend their own money; instead they want public funds for their private business ventures. These local electeds--& certain wannabe electeds as well, have failed to step up & support PUBLIC housing although they somehow can find their way to public housing at election time. A classic illustration of this is City Councilmember Tish James who wants to be the NYC Public Advocate. For many decades at 321 Ashland Place was a Salvation Army Social Service Center that helped poor folks. Tish James went & found $54 million dollars of public tax money & gave it to BAM to take the once two story Social Service building & enlarge it to a 7 story BAM Arts and Cultural Playhouse for the wealthy elite. Anyone who wants a guided tour thru NYCHA Public Housing ought to contact me.

Joe Gonzalez, you go girl. I must say, that I attend BAM and their cultural playhouse and I am not a constituent wealthy elite. As a matter of fact, BAM is host to many non wealthy elite events and I challenge you senor gonzalez to attend and stop stereotyping (That cultural events are for the wealthy elite). I think you may have a slight apathy for culture. It's a shame and a sham that you post your subjective whining when in fact the truth is you are bounded to live within the limits of your NYC housing complex because you are blinded by your stereotyping
