Brooklyn Museum Wins Top Award

The museum has been recognized by the Institute of Museum and Library Services.

has been recognized by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) and is one of only ten institutions to win the 2011 National Medal for Museum and Library Service.

Founded in 1823 as an apprentices' library, the Brooklyn Museum has grown to be one of the largest art museums in the country. It was designed to educate not only the people of Brooklyn, but as a "museum of everything for everyone,” according to a statement.

"To be acknowledged by IMLS from among the many thousands of institutions in the United States is an exceptional tribute to the Museum Trustees, staff, volunteers, and supporters,” said Arnold Lehman, museum director.

The National Medal is the nation's highest honor for museums and libraries to be recognized for their civic, educational, economic, environmental, and social contributions. Nominees must have demonstrated innovative approaches to public service and community outreach to be considered.

The other museum recipients of the National Medal are: EdVenture Children's Museum, Columbia, SC; Erie Art Museum, Erie, PA; Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden, Richmond, VA; Madison Children's Museum, Madison, WI; Hill Museum & Manuscript Library, Collegeville, MN.
