5 Things: 9/11 Hero Needs Bone Marrow and a LaunchPad Open House

1. Do good. There's an Urgent bone marrow drive for NYPD 9/11 hero. Steve Bonano, the head of security at the Barclays Center, a Navy veteran and a 30-year veteran of the NYPD, is suffering from a rare form of 9/11 related blood cancer and is in need of a bone marrow transplant. To raise awareness about this disease — and to hopefully find a match to save Steve's life — Forest City Ratner is hosting a bone marrow registry drive this week, Tuesday and Wednesday May 7-8 from 8 am to 6 pm, at 345 Jay Street.

2. Go to a show. Tonight at The Way Station there's an evening of folk, singer-songwriter and Rock-a-Billy with a linke-up of American Folk + Bucky Hayes + The Humdrums. Show starts at 8 p.m. 683 Washington Ave. bet. St. Marks and Prospect. Free.

3. Check out LaunchPad. There's also a LaunchPad Open House where you can find out about what they do, hang out and each moderately priced ice cream sundaes (while supplies last). 721 Franklin Ave. bet. Park and Sterling. 8 p.m. Free.

4. Grow your brain.
How about some intellectual stimulation tonight at Growing Cities: The Roots of Agriculture in NYC, a lecture and discussion exploring how the city evolved from tracts of family farms growing tomatoes and corn to the familiar grid linked by subways and miles of paved roads. Brooklyn Brainery, (Carrol Gardens location) 515 Court Street. $10.

5. Move the car. Alternate side parking rules are in effect today. However, they will be suspended on Thursday, May 9 for Solemnity of the Ascension.
