Where to Go With the Kids: Weekend Edition

Our weekly calendar of children's events in Prospect Heights and beyond.

 

Saturday, May 12 

Story Play Kids get the chance to play with toys and hear stories. Ages 0 to 5. , 10 Grand Army Plaza, 10-11 a.m. Free.

Greenlight Kids Story Time Author Ame Dyckman and illustrator Dan Yaccarino present their new book Boy and Bot. Ame will read from her book while Dan does live drawings in his signature style, and afterwards kids can draw their own robot friends! Ages 3-7. , 686 Fulton St. (at S Portland St), 11 a.m., Free. 

 Children become naturalists as they explore plant and animal life cycles and experience the springtime world through fun, hands-on activities, scavenger hunts, and story time. Workshops also on May 13, 19, 20 and June 2 and 3 (Sundays are 1-3 p.m.). , 1000 Washington Ave, 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Free with garden admission of $10 adults, kids under 12 are free.

 All ages can enjoy this festival on the plaza that features music by Brooklyn Youth Chorus; art workshops by artist, Felix Plaza and illustrator Taeeun Yoo; book signing by author/illustrator, Melanie Hope Greenberg; and other activities. In case of rain, the festival will be held in the Dweck Center/Lobby. , 10 Grand Army Plaza, 1-4 p.m. Free. 

 The Carousel is open Thursdays – Sundays and school holidays, 12 to 5 p.m. $2 per ride; $9 for a book of five tickets. Enter Prospect Park at the Willink entrance, located at Ocean and Flatbush Avenues and Empire Boulevard.

There are more than 250 species of birds in Prospect Park. See some of them at this weekly event that is engaging for both older children and adults. The Audubon Center at the Boathouse (just inside the Lincoln Road/Ocean Ave. entrance to Prospect Park), 12-1:30 p.m., Free.

Lefferts House Events Today this historic house is hosting Second Floor Tours (1-4:30 p.m. on the half hour) and Race around the Farmyard (2:30-3:30 p.m.). Lefferts Historic House at Prospect Park (Use entrance at Empire Boulevard and Flatbush and Ocean Avenues), Free.

 Make all-natural and recycled crafts with a new project each week. The Audubon Center at the Boathouse (just inside the Lincoln Road/Ocean Ave. entrance to Prospect Park). 1-2 p.m., all ages, Free.

Brooklyn Children's Museum Events The museum has events for kids all day. See their schedule here. 145 Brooklyn Ave. bet. St. Marks and Prospect. Free with admission of $7.50 for everyone 1 year and older.  

Puppetworks' The Jungle Book Rudyard Kipling's 1894 fables of India
with an original song score adapted for Marionettes. Suggested for kids 3+. Reservations suggested at 718-965-3391 or puppetworks@verizon.net. 338 Sixth Ave. at Fourth Street. 12:30 and 2:30 p.m. $8 adults, $7 kids (note, no credit cards accepted). 

Transit Museum: Transit Time Capsules Two “bluebird” cars on the Museum’s platform level traveled to the World’s Fair decades apart, one in 1939 and the other in 1964. Learn about the Fairs and the Westinghouse Time Capsules, which are meant to stay sealed for 5,000 years. Kids will use MetroCards, maps and items they bring from home to fashion time capsules that tell the story of transit today. For ages 5+ New York Transit Museum, Corner of Boerum Pl & Schermerhorn St, 1:30 p.m., Free with museum admission (adults $7, kids 2-17 and seniors $5).  

Prospect Park Zoo Events On Saturdays and Sundays, there are events for kids going on all day including sea lion feedings, keeper chats, close-up encounters with individual animals and more. See today's schedule here. , 450 Flatbush Avenue. Free with zoo admission of $8 adults, $5 kids 3-12.

 

Sunday, May 13

 The Museum’s collections will inspire kids to imagine and create new worlds while exploring color and other elements of art in this ninety-minute class. , 200 Eastern Parkway,11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., Ages 4-7, $10 plus museum admission of $12 adults, $8 seniors and students, children under 12, free.

Sunday Stories for Kids Come hear your favorite children's authors read their latest books. , 143 7th Ave, 11-1 p.m., Free.

Greenlight Baby Story Time This week story time is for moms though kids are welcome. Brooklyn writer Erin Bried presents her new book, How to Rock Your Baby: And Other Timeless Tips for Modern Moms. , 686 Fulton St (at S. Portland St), 11 a.m. Free.

Concerning Learning Open Play Families can make impromptu puppet shows, doing craft activities, drawing on our white boards, engaging in learning activities on our touch-screen computers, playing games, exploring our book collection and more! No reservation needed, caretaker supervision required. Concerning Learning, 213 Eastern Parkway, downstairs, between Washington and Classon, noon to 4 p.m. $10/child.

Adult Book Talk and Games for Kids  Authors Cheryl and William de Jong-Lambert will be on hand to discuss their new book Outdoors with Kids New York City while kids play “learn what’s in your pack”; explore a campsite; or take part in a scavenger hunt and other games. Afterward, take the whole family on a naturalist-guided walk along the Waterfall Trail, where you’ll learn about the park’s network of waterways. The Audubon Center at the Boathouse (just inside the Lincoln Road/Ocean Ave. entrance to Prospect Park). 1-2:30 p.m., Free.

Monday, May 14

 Each week Annie Nieves will lead the group in an art project that promotes creativity and experimentation. The class also includes some independent play and concludes with music and a sing-a-long. For ages 2-5. , 755 Dean St. at Underhill. 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. $10/child ($5/additional sibling).

Gaming for Kids Kids aged 7-11 play video games and board games in this monthly event., 10 Grand Army Plaza, 4-5 p.m. Free. 

Sea Lion Feeding This daily event features the Prospect Park Zoo sea lions showing off their dives, catching fish mid-air and other tricks. , 450 Flatbush Avenue, 11:30 a.m., 2 p.m., and 4 p.m., Free with zoo admission of $8 adults, $5 kids 3-12.
