Where to Donate Excess Non-Perishables

Shoppers emptied shelves before Hurricane Irene, now what can you do with all your excess cans of food?

Empty shelves in supermarkets across the city spoke for themselves. As Hurricane Irene approached, New Yorkers heeded the warnings and stocked up on non-perishable food in case the electricity failed. But now that everything is, relatively, back to normal, and your cupboards are filled to the brim with canned tuna, why not consider helping your neighbors in need?

Food pantries and soup kitchens have been overwhelmed with demand recently. A study by the New York City Coalition Against Hunger found demand increased by 7 percent in 2010, on top of a 20-percent increase in 2009. More than half of the food pantries and soup kitchens in the city did not have enough food to meet those demands.

You can help locally by bringing non-perishable food items to the places listed below. Things most needed are the canned goods you may have purchased before the hurricane, but also include baby formula, baby food, evaporated milk, dry pasta, and rice.
