Special Events 

Sigma Story Time Volunteers from the Brooklyn Alumni Chapter of the Phi Beta Sigma fraternity read stories for children ages 3 to 8 years once a month. Central Library, 10 Grand Army Plaza, 12-1 p.m. Free.

Tales of Snow A wintertime collection of short stories and skits that incorporate masks, puppets, stories, songs and dance. Central Library, Dweck Performing Arts Center, 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Free.

Transit Museum: Windows of the Elevated Many of today’s elevated subway stations feature faceted glass scenes of the surrounding community and local culture. See examples of these vivid installations, and then create a window scene of your own design. For ages 5+. 1:30 p.m. New York Transit Museum, Corner of Boerum Pl & Schermerhorn St, 1:30 p.m., Free with museum admission (adults $7, kids 2-17 and seniors $5).  

Sing-Along with Larry May Songwriter Larry May will bring his guitar, ukelele and maybe a mandolin and play a collection of original kid-friendly songs. 10am to 11 a.m. Lark Cafe, 1007 Church Ave. at Coney Island Avenue. Ditmas Park. Free.

Weekly Events 

Arfie's Sing Along and Open Play Each Saturday morning, ArtsCetera hosts a drop-in sing along and open play session for young children (up to age 4) and their parents/caretakers. 212 Smith Street at Butler, Carrol Gardens, $10 per family (two kids max). 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. 

Nature's Helpers Families take a tour of the park and its waterways and help keep it clean along the way. Gloves, garbage bags and trash grabbers will be provided. Meet at Prospect Park's Audubon Center, Lincoln Rd & Ocean Ave., 2-3 p.m., Free. 

Handiwork: Tasks and Crafts from the Past Kids experience arts, crafts, and games of 19th-century Brooklyn. Lefferts Historic House at Prospect Park (Use entrance at Empire Boulevard and Flatbush and Ocean Avenues), 2:30-3:30 p.m. $3 suggested admission for adults.

Puppetworks' Hansel and Gretel The 1857 Brothers Grimm story, with songs by Humperdinck, adapted for Marionettes by Nicolas Coppola. Suggested for kids 3+. The show runs through Dec. 16. Brooklyn Children's Museum Events The museum has events for kids all day. See their schedule here. 145 Brooklyn Ave. bet. St. Marks and Prospect. Free with admission of $9 for everyone 1 year and older.

Prospect Park Zoo Events On Saturdays and Sundays, there are events for kids going on all day including sea lion feedings, keeper chats, close-up encounters with individual animals and more. See today's schedule here. Prospect Park Zoo, 450 Flatbush Avenue. Free with zoo admission of $8 adults, $5 kids 3-12.

Special Events:

Winter Solstice Celebration Open to all, this family-friendly festival includes singing, readings, reflection, and ceremony, and it is a family-friendly celebration. The Brooklyn Society for Ethical Culture, 53 Prospect Park West, Park Slope, 11 a.m., free. 

City Stomp Live & Suzi Shelton Benefit Concert Two greats of children's music join together for this benefit concert for families affected by Sandy. Advance tickets are $12 per person (2 and over) Tickets are $15 at the door for everyone. Doors open at 2:30. Botanic Garden Discovery Workshop: Winter Wildcrafting  
Learn about how animals snuggle down for winter, search for animal hideouts, and craft your very own tiny creature houses. Meet in the Lillian and Amy Goldman Atrium at the Visitor Center. 2-4 p.m. Brooklyn Botanic Garden, 1000 Washington Ave. Free with admission of $10 adults, $5 seniors, students, kids under 12 are free.
