PHOTO: Opossum Freed From Fence in Prospect Park

A trapped opossum was freed from a fence near Prospect Park Lake, with the help of local volunteers and park staff.

Park staff and a local wildlife rehabilitator freed an opossum trapped in some fencing at the southeast corner of Prospect Park Lake last week.

Wildlife rehabilitator Anne-Katrin Titze said she and partner Ed Bahlman saw the trapped animal at about 11 a.m. on Feb. 15. They watched the opossum for about twenty minutes, to make sure it needed help, before contacting park staff. Martin Woess of the Natural Resources Crew had heard about the trapped animal also, and met the couple at the lake with gloves and a cage.

Titze said that in the end Woess “lifted free the possum and it leapt down onto the lakeside, happily scurrying off and ending up climbing a tree into safety.”
