Date Night: Date Like an Egyptian

Where to Take your Date this Week in Prospect Heights

For some people, finding a date isn't the hard part. It's picking what to do with your evening that proves to be the challenge.

Luckily, there's plenty going on right in our area to help make planning the perfect date a little easier, no matter which weekend night you want to step out in the neighborhood.

Friday, 7:30 p.m.: Kick things off with a cocktail at Cornelius, a hidden gem on an otherwise near-empty block, at the corner of Vanderbilt and Pacific Avenues.

The décor is old-money hip, with mahogany lining and exposed brick, but the laidback vibe will keep you impressively comfortable. Their specialty is handmade, boutique drinks like Vanderbilt's Long Island Railroad Tea and the Prohibition Cocktail, the likes of which will warm you up and tide you over until dinner.

8:45 p.m.: Walk on over to . The Museum now offers extended hours until 10:00 pm on Thursdays and Fridays, making Friday a better bet than Saturday for a culture-centric date night this season.

There are several outstanding exhibits up at the moment, but for the best dinner conversation and to please everyone's taste, check out both the Fred Tomaselli and the Body Parts. The former features Tomaselli's paintings from the past twenty years.

Weaving together pop culture and nature in many cases, his work combines collages, painting and drawing to create provocative, otherworldly visuals that will have you both staring. And he's a local – Tomaselli was one of the first artists to migrate to Brooklyn and still works in the borough today.

After you swing through those modern galleries, travel back a few thousand years to the Body Parts exhibit. This is the first time the Museum is displaying some of its one-of-a-kind ancient Egyptian pieces that specifically represent the civilization's idea of body images. Conversation pieces indeed.

10:00 p.m.: Head to for dinner, on Washington Avenue between Bergen Street and St. Marks Avenue. You should be hungry by now; it's exhausting to pretend you know something about art. But now is your chance to show him or her that you do know how to use chopsticks.

The Sushi For Two is just $36 for eighteen pieces and one special roll from which you can choose house specialties like the Sweet Pumpkin or Thai Shrimp Tempura rolls. The menu is expansive, with offerings of fully cooked meat and vegetable dishes, should raw food rub one of you the wrong way.

If dating during the daytime is more your style, there are plenty of ways to take advantage of a crisp, sunny fall Saturday.

Saturday 12:00 pm: Start off with a hearty brunch at Flatbush Farm at the corner of St. Mark's and Sixth Avenues. The price is right with most entrees being just $12, and you'll feel good to know that their meat is hormone and antibiotic free and the produce is largely local. The fare has a gourmet, made-by-mom feel ranging from Pumpkin pancakes to crispy duck confit. And don't worry, there's plenty of coffee.

1:30 p.m.: If the weather suits, don't just give him or her flowers, take your lucky partner to the romantic Brooklyn Botanic Gardens. It's just $8 for adults and you two can stroll, hand in hand or arm in arm, for as many hours as you like through BBG's more than twelve outdoor garden spaces. The rock garden, herb garden, and rose garden are just a few paths to take before you can continue into the conservatory where you can look at the Bonsai Tree museum or the Aquatic House. The Garden's Terrace Café sells coffee and treats if you've worked up an appetite from all that swooning.
