Carpenters Union Continues Protesting Barclays Center

Barclays Center passerby may have gotten used to the red-font sign proclaiming shame on the Barclays Center and Bruce Ratner of the development company Forest City Ratner.

But the New York City Union of Carpenters and Contractors isn't ready to go away.

"They've made promises they haven't fulfilled," said union member and carpenter Raul Reyus.

Reyus said the Barclays Center has been hiring part-time carpenters and contractors instead of full time workers in order to avoid paying for health insurance and other benefits.

Likewise, Reyus said he and other union members are frustrated that Forest City Ratner has focused on building affordable income in Long Island rather than Brooklyn.

"Brooklyn residents have been exploited and browbeaten by Forest City Ratner and their associates," a union pamphlet said.

What do you think of Reyus' claims? Do you agree or disagree? Let us know in the comments.
