Carlton Avenue Association Monthly Meeting

Several residents from Carlton Avenue gathered to discuss issues within the neighborhood.

The Carlton Avenue Association gathered last night for their monthly meeting to discuss two important issues affecting Carlton Avenue and the construction of the anticipated Nets arena. Richard Goldstein chairs the monthly meeting.

Carlton Avenue Traffic Signal

Last Wednesday evening around 5 p.m., a woman was struck and seriously injured by a dollar van. The unidentified victim was taken away to a trauma center at an unknown hospital. The woman who had the right of way was struck by the intersection of Carlton Ave. and Prospect Pl., which residents have said has been a problem spot for speeders who try to beat the light at this critical intersection. Residents from the Carlton Avenue Association have reached out to Chris Hrones, who is the Downtown Brooklyn coordinator of the city Department of Transportation about this problem.

Residents are also concerned about the intersection of Park Pl. and Carlton Ave., as some motorists often run through the stop sign at this intersection also. After constant appeals to the agency, a newly installed camera light will be installed at the intersection of Carlton Avenue and Park Place within one month.

Residents also feel that the dollar vans removes the safety net for pedestrians in the area. With the 7th Avenue train station nearby and the constant flow of rush hour residents coupled with kids traveling home from nearby schools, they hope the synchronization of stop lights on Flatbush Ave. will also help alleviate these problems. They fought for the four way stop signs along Carlton decades ago and they did work for a long time. Now the residents feel the stop lights are a better solution.

Atlantic Yards Construction

With continuous construction of the Atlantic Yards arena and housing development has brought about continuous problems with rats in the area. Many residents who live in the construction zone are constantly crossing paths with the rodents. One resident recommended that brownstone home owners hire an exterminator and check under the stoop steps for nests. They also recommend that residents collect and enter their concerns and call the 311 system to have a paper trail of all complaints in reference to the construction. Residents are encouraged to contact 311 in reference to any complaints including noise, dust, construction during off peak hours or any incidents that may potentially pose a threat to area residents.

In discussing the Atlantic Yards Project, there will be a film screening of Battle for Brooklyn on Friday, Oct. 7 at the Park Slope Co-op. The documentary explores the fight between residents and business owners facing eminent domain, corporate interests and exposes misconceptions about the project. The film is free for everyone.

The Carlton Avenue Association holds its monthly meetings at 608 Carlton Ave. All Carlton Avenue residents are encouraged to attend.
