5 (Free) Things: Brooklyn Botanic Garden's June Jubilee and First Saturday at Brooklyn Museum

Prospect Heights-area subway, alternate side and event information you won't want to miss.

 

1. You need to help beautify the neighborhood. You can your neighbors and give back to the community at two great events today: You can  at 10 a.m. or  by installing tree guards at noon (or, for the super citizen, both). See details at the links.

2. You need a night out, a free night out. Head to  where tonight highlights include Son de Madres' blend of Cuban, jazz, funk, and Brazilian music; the dance documentary Hands to the Sky, a talk by the entrepreneurs behind Blue Marble Ice Cream about a their work to help Rwandan women open their country's first ice cream shop, gallery tours, a talk by the author of The Invention of Brownstone Brooklyn, and a performance by Zongo Junction. , 200 Washington Avenue, 5 to 11 p.m. Free.

3. You need to get the kids out of the house. You're in luck because today there's , a full day of free admission and special programs to celebrate the opening of the  that includes West African cora music and activities for kids and adults. Brooklyn Botanic Garden, 990 Washington Ave., noon to 6 p.m. Free. Another event worth noting is the free Princess Show at Adventurer's. See our  for more options. 

4. You need to know if your train is running ... It is! There are no planned service changes affecting Prospect Heights stations all weekend, according to the MTA.

5. ... And if you have to move your car. You do; the next alternate side suspension won't be until Wednesday, July 4, according to the NYCDOT. (The next alternate side suspension that actually helps people in Prospect Heights won't be until Monday, August 20 for Idul-Fitr, sigh.)
