These non-profits are raising money, food and clothing to give to those in need.

The holidays are a time to give thanks for what we have, and many local residents choose to show that by giving to those who lack basic necessities. If you're thinking of contributing to a local nonprofit, consider one of the following or leave a comment with a suggested nonprofit below.

Bikur Cholim of Crown Heights

Currently accepting monetary donations, Bikur Cholim of Crown Heights provides support for the needs of the medically distressed in Crown Heights and the greater Brooklyn community. They arrange transportation to and from doctors appointments and hospitals, prepare and deliver kosher meals for families of the ill, and offer financial relief. Crown Heights Youth Collective

A long standing not-for-profit, the Crown Heights Youth Collective seeks monetary donations to offer, among other things, an outreach program, after school tutorials, and career and educational guidance to children in the community. Child Development Support Corporation

Serving central Brooklyn for 35 years, CDSC provides a range of social services to families in the area. They seek volunteer help and monetary donations. To make a donation, call (718) 398-2050.

Brooklyn Public Library

Although the Brooklyn Public Library is one of the largest funded organizations in the city, they are one of the biggest sources of educational programming for children in Brooklyn, and seek monetary and book donations. To make a donation, call (718) 230-2100 or visit their website.

Brooklyn AIDS Task Force

This organization with a branch in Prospect Heights is the oldest and largest non-profit HIV/AIDS prevention treatment and service program in Brooklyn, and seeks monetary donations. To make a donation, call (718) 622-2910 or visit www.batf.net.

Goodwill Gospel Store

This store's mission is to, "help people earn a living, improve their lives, and strengthen their families and communities." They seek both item and monetary donations. To make a donation, call (718) 287-9001.

Heights and Hill Community Council

This group of clergy and community members is dedicated to helping older adults in the neighborhood live safely and independently in their own homes by providing direct services such as case management, transportation, and referral services. Books Through Bars

Salvation Army Thrift Store
