Calling Kid Rockstars: Songwriting Workshop Comes to Brooklyn

Free Spirits Music has opened registration for the 2013 Free Spirits Songwriting Workshop for Kids and Teens.

The eight week workshop, beginning on January 8, gives kids ages 7-17 the opporitunity to write at least two original songs and record an in-studio demo. Teen sessions will perform at a famous NYC music club, all alongside professional singer/songwriters.

Free Spirits Music's mission states that "anyone can be a songwriter, and everyone has something to say. Songwriting is more than strumming a guitar, plunking piano keys, or singing a tune. It is a journey into our innermost thoughts. It is an expression of our happiest moments and our saddest experiences."

Each week features different songwriting themes about memorable melodies, catchy hooks, the form of a song, and how to record your own demo. Whether your child is starting from scratch or has written a bunch of tunes, this workshop will provide a deeper understanding of melody, harmony, rhythm, and lyricism while cultivating confidence and stage presence.

Tuesday sessions for ages 11-17 begin January 8. It is recommended that teens have a basic knowledge of guitar or piano before registering.

Wednesday sessions for ages 7-10 begin January 9. No prior musical experience is necessary.

The workshop will be held at Complete Music Studios at 227 St Marks Ave between Vanderbilt and Underhill Aves in Prospect Heights.

The eight week workshop will be offered at the discounted price of $350 through December 15.
