Thanksgiving Volunteering: A Last-Minute Option

If you haven't found a place yet to give back on Turkey Day 2011, here's a spot that still needs help.

During the holidays, the charitable impulse kicks in. And soup kitchens and Meals on Wheels that are searching for volunteers all year suddenly have all the help they need.

But if you want to volunteer, we’ve found one place that’s still needs help:

Masbia, a soup kitchen in Midwood is still accepting volunteers for their 7-10 p.m. slots today, Nov. 23, and tomorrow, Nov. 24.

Masbia is located at 1372 Coney Island Ave., bet. Ave. J and K (it's right near the Ave. J, Q-train stop, about a 15-minute subway trip from Prospect Heights).

Volunteers will be helping to clean up and to prepare food both for the Thanksgiving meal and also to be frozen for the soup kitchen to use throughout the holiday season.

A Masbia spokesman pointed out that "virtual volunteers" (aka donors)  are needed just as badly. You can donate to Masbia online here.

There is also a list of places to volunteer at A Child Grows in Brooklyn. (Added 1:39 p.m.)

If you’re looking for a place to go on Thanksgiving (or know someone who is), a Thanksgiving meal open to all will take place at Masbia from 4 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Closer to home, St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church, 1227 Pacific St. (bet. Bedford and Nostrand) will be serving a Thanksgiving meal open to all beginning at noon.
