Steel is Erected

The first elements of vertical construction began Tuesday.

In this special edition of we've documented a major milestone in the construction of the Barclays Center: The erection of vertical steel beams.

If you walk down Altantic Avenue, you'll notice something you've never seen before: A field of grey steel beams peaking over that separates the street from .

Tuesday morning construction crews began erecting the the steel skeleton that will support the Barclays Center's main arena, as well as the building's facade and canopy.

"The installation of steel is always a major milestone for a construction project," said Forest City Ratner CEO Bruce Ratner in a statement. "With the foundation work largely done, we are now poised to go vertical."

Although much of the development has been delayed, the construction of the arena, which is set to open in the summer of 2012, appears to be on schedule.
