State Assembly Candidate Alabi Endorsed by District Council 37

Olanike Alabi has won the support of New York City's largest union of public employees in her bid for New York State Assembly's 57th District. The seat is being vacated by Hakeem Jeffries who is running for Congress.

, a life-long Clinton Hill resident, has been a Democratic State Committeewoman/District Leader for the 57th District since 2006 and works part time for retiring Rep. Edolphus "Ed" Towns.

"I am deeply grateful for the support of DC37," Alabi said in a joint statement with the union, "I understand the important role their members have played and have been proud to join them in challenging budget cuts, layoffs, privatization of public services and exposing the unfair and cruel labor practices of contracting out which undermines the labor movement and workers' rights in general."

With 120,000 active members and 50,000 retirees, District Council 37 is the largest union for public employees in New York City. Their members work in fields as diverse as lifeguarding, consumer affairs inspection, and psychology.

A statement by the union reads in part:

"Ms. Alabi is a dedicated public servant who has shown unmatched commitment to social justice as she has worked closely with our union of 120,000 members and retirees and the people of her community."

If elected, Alabi has said she plans to try to maintain rent stabilization, support funding for public schools, and encourage entrepreneurs.
