Hakeem Jeffries Holds 'Subway Office Hours'

The assemblyman and congressional candidate continues his untraditional method of bringing politics directly to the people.

 

Though he recently won the Democratic nomination to run for New York’s 8th District in Congress, Assemblyman Hakeem Jeffries is still keeping the six-year-old tradition of his Summer at the Subway Office Hours alive, according to a recent story in Metrofocus.

Recently, Jeffries planted himself on the corner of Bergen Street and Flatbush Avenue, outside the 2/3 Bergen Street station, taking in the concerns of residents.

One of the biggest, of course, was .

“Before construction began, concerns were about whether it [Atlantic Yards] could be halted. Then it shifted moving on to concerns about how to deal with ,” Jeffries told the site.

Ralph Vernon, a Prospect Heights resident for more than 40 years talked to Jeffries about how he is thankful for the , but is worried about the increased rent that will come along with the neighborhood becoming a destination.

“Times are tough and a lot of families are struggling,” he told Metrofocus. “This is affecting people who live here. People will have to move out.”

Jeffries’ office told the blog that 50 percent of the issues his office investigates get started because someone talked with him on the street about a problem they noticed.

Jeffries’ remaining Summer Subway Office Hours are:

  • August 7 – Franklin Avenue and Fulton Street (C train)
  • August 8 – Clinton and Lafayette Avenues (G train)
  • August 14 – Classon and Lafayette Avenues (G train)
  • August 15 –  Hanson and Ft. Greene Places (2, 3, 4, 5, B, Q trains to Atlantic Ave. – Barclays Center)
