Pop-Up Show Brings Art to Vacant Storefronts

Don’t have to go to a museum for your art fix?

Now you need go no further than the corner of Classon Avenue and Lincoln Place, where the “pop-up” exhibit Food Lust: Shock Candy debuts Tuesday evening with an opening reception.

The 21-piece mixed-media show, which runs through Jan. 3, will be installed inside the windows of a six vacant storefronts and viewed from the sidewalk.

The corner used to hold a Laundromat, but it’s long been vacant. Curator Naomi Huth organizes shows in such empty storefronts for a dual purpose of bringing art to people where they live and to improving neighborhood streets.

“When you walk around New York you see a lot of buildings and storefronts that aren’t being used, and I think that’s really detrimental to communities,” she said. I think that we can use these resources to show art and teach people about art.”

This is the first show curated by Huth, who founded the roving gallery Where Am I (no question mark) over the summer. Although she now lives in Greenpoint, she has a special interest in Prospect Heights, having lived on St. Marks between Grand and Classon for several years.

Huth is in the process of turning Where am I into a non-profit. Her next project, which takes place in Bushwick in the spring, will include community workshops.

The current show features works from local artists Claire Lieberman, Lorelei Ramirez, Martha Rich, and Matt Schwartz.

Works include displays of sculptures made of Jell-O, photography, paintings, a hanging sculpture, collage and video.

Food Lust: Shock Candy holds its opening reception Tuesday, Dec. 6 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at 835 Classon Ave. The reception is open to the public and will include free jello creations and BOMB Lager beer in "signature cans designed by Billy the Artists."
