CSA Seeking Members

Friday is the deadline to sign up for new Bergen Street Community Supported Agriculture program.

A Carlton Avenue resident is trying to organize a Community Supported Agriculture program for Prospect Heights, but she needs 18 more people to sign up before the April 20 deadline.

The CSA was hosted at Ortine last year, but when Emma Boast found out that the Washington Avenue restaurant was unable to host them again this year, she offered to help.

"They asked for help to find a location. I just decided to take this on because I figured there was probably a demand in the neighborhood since the other two CSAs have been selling out year after year," said Boast, a 24-year-old food writer and chef. (The other two CSAs are the Prospect Heights CSA and the Prospect Park CSA.)

She found a spot at at a pottery studio on Bergen Street, between Cartlon and Vanderbilt, but still needs more members before the CSA is a go.

The produce comes from Lancaster Farm Fresh Cooperativea non-profit organic farmers' co-op.

"One great thing about his CSA is that it’s a cooperative farm organization. So you’re supporting a lot of different farmers and there’s a lot more variety as a result," said Boast, adding that many of the farmers have been growing produce for generations.

Those who join the Lancaster Farm Fresh Cooperative CSA in Prospect Heights can choose vegetable, fruit, or flower shares. A half share of organic vegetables (enough to feed 1-2 people) costs $450 for 25 weekly deliveries—or $18 per week. An installment payment plan is also available by request.

Weekly deliveries of farm-fresh, organic produce will begin in mid-May and conclude at the end of October, for a total of 25 weeks. Members will be able to pick up their shares on Wednesdays from 2 - 8 pm at Brooklyn People's Pottery (603 Bergen Street #104).
