Best of the Blogs

A weekly roundup of must-read stories from our favorite Brooklyn blogs.

If there's one thing Brooklyn has a lot of, it's writers. And in this day and age, a lot of writers inevitably means a lot of blogs. So many wonderful things are written about this borough and our neighborhood specifically that it's tough to read it all. That's why, every week, we'll compile a few stories from Brooklyn's best blogs that we think you should take a look at.

Prospect Heights has received more than a few mentions this week on Brownstoner. 230 Park Place, between Vanderbilt and Flatbush, was featured as Wednesday's "Rental of the Day," while Tuesday's "Building of the Day" featured the Renaissance Revival brownstone at 542 Carlton, between Dean and Bergen Streets.

A 2,470-square-foot two bedroom apartment along Grand Army Plaza, also made Brownstoner's "Last Week's Biggest Sales" list.

On Wednesday, the L Magazine published a list of the 50 best blocks in Brooklyn and two Prospect Heights blocks made the cut. At number 12 was Sterling Pl. between Underhill and Washington Avenues, made famous by neighborhood resident Kimber VanRy's fight for his right to drink beer on his stoop.

At number 40 is Pacific St. between Fifth and Sixth Avenues, which before it was closed for construction included "an unusually high architectural pedigree, from the elegant brick Spalding Building at the corner of Sixth Avenue and the historical firehouse next door, to the ornate Atlantic Arts Building nearer to Fifth Avenue."

On Wednesday, the Huffington Post featured an op-ed by architect and neighborhood resident Jeff Sherman, who is working with New York City Council Member Letitia James to make the dangerous five-spoke intersection where Washington, Underhill, and Atlantic Avenues meet safer.

If you were a regular at Freddy's Bar before it was closed to make way for the Atlantic Yards Development, you're in luck: Only the Blog Knows Brooklyn is reporting that a couple former staff members from the neighborhood staple are opening up a new location on Fifth Ave. in South Park Slope.

Meanwhile, one of the bar's biggest defenders, the Atlantic Yards Report, has been keeping its watchful eye on the Barclays Center construction. The AYR posted video that a neighborhood resident shot of the construction site early Wednesday morning.
