Abigail Wine Bar Closes Down

Italian restaurant to replace four-year-old Classon Avenue eatery.

After more than four years, Abigail Wine Bar & Cafe has closed.

Abigail Hancock, owner of the restaurant on the corner of Classon Avenue and St. Johns Place, said she opted to close after months of slow business.

Hitchcock and her husband, Jason Noble, opened the restaurant in May of 2008. During the day the spacious, corner spot was a café with WiFi, full coffee bar and extensive tea menu. But it also offered an upscale seasonal menu and became a restaurant and wine bar at night, with live jazz on the weekends and open mic nights during the week.

The restaurant shut down Sept. 6.

Hitchcock said she’s sad to close, but will now have more time to concentrate on her second restaurant, Camaje Bistro in the West Village, which opened in 1997 and cooking classes she offers there.

“It’s hard but it’s already a relief in a way,” she said. “Running two places when it is truly a mom ad pop operation was tough.”

An Italian restaurant will open in the place. According to the owner it will still function as a wine bar at night and a coffee shop with WiFi during the day.

Hitchcock, who lives down the street on St. Marks Avenue, said she hopes to still see her customers around the neighborhood.

To them, she says, “Thanks for the four and a half great years and support. We’ll miss everyone.”
